Grade 11 English Literature – September Monthly Records

During the month of September, our focus was on both poetry and prose, encouraging students to deepen their analytical, interpretive, and critical appreciation skills.


Poem: An Earthen Goblet by Harindranath Chattopadhyay

This poem presents a dramatic dialogue between a goblet and the potter, symbolizing themes of creation, transformation, and the passage of life.

Key Points Covered:

  • Themes – Transformation from clay to goblet, human creativity, suffering in change, and the cycle of existence.

  • Voice and Personification – The goblet speaks, revealing its journey and experiences.

  • Symbolism – Clay represents raw potential, while the goblet symbolizes shaped destiny.

  • Poetic Devices – Imagery, metaphor, personification, and dialogue structure.

  • Learning Outcome – Students practiced interpreting symbolic poetry and expressing personal responses through critical appreciation.


Prose: The Vendor of Sweets by R. K. Narayan (Chapters 4, 5 & 6)

Students continued their study of Narayan’s novel, focusing on the conflict between tradition and modernity, and the tension between parent and child.

Chapter 4

  • Jagan’s philosophy of life and business rooted in simplicity and tradition.

  • Emergence of Mali’s contrasting mindset influenced by modern education and ambition.

Chapter 5

  • Intensification of the father–son conflict.

  • Jagan’s struggle to balance love for his son with his disapproval of Mali’s choices.

Chapter 6

  • Narayan’s subtle irony in depicting generational clashes.

  • Cultural and emotional challenges faced by Jagan as he witnesses the shift from traditional values to modern aspirations.

Learning Outcome:

  • Students analyzed character development, cultural contrasts, and narrative techniques.

  • They were guided to identify irony, humor, and realism in Narayan’s prose.
