In September, our Grade 10 Ordinary Level students explored both poetry and prose in depth. The focus of this month’s study was on close reading, thematic analysis, and critical appreciation.
Students engaged with Emily Dickinson’s subtle yet powerful poem, examining:
Imagery and Observation – How Dickinson captures a simple moment in nature with precise detail.
Themes – The relationship between humans and the natural world, curiosity, and gentleness versus instinct.
Literary Devices – Use of personification, symbolism, and tone to convey deeper meaning.
Critical Appreciation – Students learned to analyze how everyday events can reveal universal truths in poetry.
Our reading of these chapters focused on character development and cultural context. Key areas studied include:
Chapter 4 – The conflict between tradition and modernity begins to sharpen, especially in Jagan’s views on life and business.
Chapter 5 – The strained relationship between Jagan and his son Mali is explored, highlighting generational differences.
Chapter 6 – Narayan’s portrayal of human emotions and social change comes into focus, revealing the challenges of reconciling values with ambition.
Literary Appreciation – Students practiced narrative analysis, identifying Narayan’s use of irony, humor, and realistic dialogue.
By the end of September, students were able to:
Interpret poetic imagery and connect it to broader themes.
Analyze prose for character development, cultural background, and authorial intention.
Develop critical essays that combine textual evidence with personal response.
